The McGovern Girls - 40 Days of Thankfulness (conclusion)

Tuttie and Patty - The McGovern Girls

The final day of my blog posts for 40 Days of Thankfulness is all about the McGovern Girls – Patty and Tuttie. By weird happenstance, I met these ladies when I was dating their brother. Though my relationship with Mic didn’t last, my friendship with his sisters did.

Both have been with me through thick and thin providing guidance, advice, a kind word and a beer whenever necessary. Two women that are so much a like and yet so different at the same time, they have given me a lot to be thankful for.

My last night out with the McGovern Girls and my sister Cricket too - First Friday Feb 2013 at The Independent.
Tuttie is like Switzerland. Nothing really gets to her – her theme may be “Stay Calm and Carry On”. She has one of the biggest hearts always helping someone out whether it’s a visit to an old friend, a donation to a charitable organization, getting up in the middle of the night (it seems) to take part in the Komen walk or just listening to me babble about the surrealness of my new life. However things are, good or bad, Tuttie has the solution – “Let’s do shots!”

Patty’s theme, on the other hand, would be “Party On!” with index fingers and pinkies in the air. She is quite a pal taking care of my most precious treasures: my kitties and puppies, and even being the conduit to me becoming a puppy mommy. I will always remember the day she told me with dread that she thought her pug Fiona could be pregnant. My response, “for your sake I hope she’s not, but for mine, I hope she is.” She was and I got two of the most precious treasures in my life Finn and Polly. I will always be so thankful to Patty for giving me a family. And for giving me timeless advice in the warning, “The crazies are out!”

Fiona, the new mommy and in that brood are Polly and Finn.
These ladies are some of the most fun friends I have whether getting kicked out of a concert, enjoying burgers at El Cap, making time to spend an afternoon with me before I moved, and making sure to see me when I only had a couple days back home. I love them both so much and thought they would be the perfect end (for now) to this thankful project. Kisses.

Happy Anniversary Paul – 40 Days of Thankfulness

Today, Paul and I celebrate our one-year anniversary. Well … it is the chronological date of our anniversary, but we’ll be celebrating later this week when there isn’t a threat of a level 3 weather event occurring. Last year it was a beautiful 75 degrees and sunny, today it’s gray, cold and we’re bracing for an ice storm. And that’s OK. I have him for the rest of my life so a little celebration can wait.

Many wives feel that they are the luckiest people alive to have their spouses in their lives, and we all are right. There are quite a lot of lucky people in this world. Here are just 10 simple reasons while I feel that I am the luckiest:

10. Makes me laugh every day. Not that every day is a laughfest, but we can at least chuckle every day whether it’s a pun, a tickle, a joke or just a funny original Christmas song.
9. Treats strangers well. I have learned that if a person doesn’t treat the check-out clerk, a server or any stranger in the community well, then they won’t treat those they love well. He always has a smile for people and kind words, never judging or making fun of someone less fortunate or in a different circumstance. He's always compassionate and kind to others.
8. Brought me closer on my spiritual journey. I’ve been on a spiritual journey seeking a greater connection to God and wanting to learn more about God trying out different belief systems for size and never seeming to fit. Paul then introduced me to the United Church of Christ with inclusion for all, love and understanding for all, and peace and justice for all – but no hypocrisy. I found that it’s OK (and even encouraged) to question traditional beliefs and I feel closer to God than ever before.
7. Loves my dog(s) and kitties. Paul instantly loved my puppies Finn and Polly and though his dog Millie wasn’t too keen on them, we easily melded into a family. He even placated his allergies to like my cats Misha and Lassie. Paul was there to comfort me when it was time for Finn to pass and he helped me understand my feelings – even when I said I hated God. Paul told me that it was OK to be angry at God at the time, God was big enough to get over it.
6. Asked me to marry him (sort of) on our third date. “So how do you think you would feel being a pastor’s wife?” was the question presented to the girl who liked to spend her weekends bar hopping and partying. “I could do it, but I still want to wear cool clothes and drink martinis,” was the response. We had a deal.
5. Gives me what he calls “Grace Gifts” often. A “Grace Gift” is a gift of something that is precious to you that holds more than monetary value and is from your heart with nothing expected in return. The paintings he does for Christmas gifts, the sharing of his time playing cards together, a book he just knew I would love, doing the dishes after I cooked dinner, letting me sleep in while he walks the dogs, getting me a glass of wine while I relax in a bath. These are all the perfect gift of his time, his heart and his love.
4. Has great timing. Paul entered my life at the perfect time. I was over dating and wanted someone that was a hundred times better than anyone I dated before. If I couldn’t have that I had resigned myself to living a long life with my gay best friend. Two days before Paul and I had our first date, my gay best friend found his soul mate (though we didn’t know it at the time). It all seemed to work out. I was a different woman than before and this new lady needed a new and sparkling man – enter Paul, my one-day husband.
3. Can be ourselves even as a couple. Individuality is important to me, and with Paul I can be who I am and who I want to be. I have been a golf widow on more than one occasion leaving no guilt trip when he wants to spend a weekend on the course or watching a big tournament. He understands when I want a day to stay in my meditation room just reading or going out exploring by myself. I have my likes and dislikes, as does he, but we go on being ourselves and in love with one another.
2. Makes me a better person with more love, kindness, heart and hope to give. I don’t think about me so much anymore. People say that when you have kids you realize life isn’t about you anymore. I believe you don’t have to have offspring to open yourself up and give yourself away. Paul and I aren’t on the kid path, but I have learned to be so much less selfish and so much more giving being with him. It’s not about giving my life for a little baby, it’s about giving my life away for everyone!
1. Loves me with all his heart. That says it all. And I love him with all of mine.

Bake and Share – 40 Days of Thankfulness

Bake and Share

While my fingers tickle these keys, the snow is falling outside making our little town into a winter wonderland. We are expecting between 4 and 7 inches of snow today and I bet the kids across the street were hoping more would have fallen last night so school would be canceled and they could go sledding on the hill out back. But it seems to be an all day thing.

Which is great since I don’t have to go anywhere. Not having a job sucks, but not having to go to work on a day like today is wonderful. Instead of driving on ice through traffic to the corporate jungle, I get to stay home and watch movies with my hubbie, drink hot cocoa and bake muffins to give away on Sunday.

This Sunday marks our first anniversary (which I have to say, anniversaries are so much better than weddings – less fuss and muss and more fun!) and since it also coincides with Bake and Share Day, we thought we would share with the congregation and give them some mini muffins to thank them for making our first year of marriage amazing.

This just smells and tastes like the holidays - Cranberries and Oranges
I have four recipes planned, but I don’t want to go too overboard. First, my holiday favorite Orange, Cranberry and Nut muffins. This recipe is a classic from Ocean Spray and I usually make it as bread, but today I am going to try mini muffins. (We tried these for breakfast this morning and loved them!!!)

Chocolate for breakfast - yum
The recipe that triggered this whole thing was Triple Chocolate muffins from the Dec 2013 Cooking Light magazine, which may become Paul’s new favorite. Then a muffin party wouldn’t be complete without my famous Morning Glory muffins with dried fruit and nuts and bananas. Lastly are the Pumpkin Chocolate Chip muffins which has no picture since they will be done tomorrow morning (ran out of eggs – oops).
Oh what a Glorious Morning with these muffins
A warm kitchen is a blessing on such a cold day. Plus to bake something to warm the hearts of others is also a nice touch.

What could you bake and share this holiday season?

NYC, The Doctor and Knitting – 40 Days of Thankfulness

March 31, 2007: After spending a long day riding the bus from Penn Station, shopping at IKEA and a bus ride back, with cocktails and foodie things interspersed, I found myself at 8pm not wanting to leave Patrick’s apartment yet again. I was comfortably buzzed from pomegranate margaritas and Old Fashions and was ready to just relax and begin our adventure again tomorrow.

My pal Patrick

Patrick suggested we get comfy in his Brooklyn abode and watch Doctor Who (a new season was starting) and he would teach me to knit. The stage was set and my world changed forever!

Not only did I get hooked on the Doctor after telling Patrick “I don’t want to watch that stuff, it’s too boring and geeky (too geeky for me – please).” I watched the season opener with David Tennant and his new companion Martha Jones and I was hooked for life.

Paul's early Christmas gift - a hand knit stocking all his own!
Knitting wasn’t as easy to fall in love with. Patrick taught me the basics of casting on and how to knit, but I kept messing up (remember the cocktails beforehand) and getting frustrated. But I did carry on and keep trying. I had that summer and fall free so I would stay up into the wee hours watching Netflixed past Doctors and knitting scarves. Now in Florida there isn’t much call for scarves, but I knit them anyway.

Over the years I have learned many more stitches and techniques moving from scarves and headbands to handbags, socks, hats, jewelry and fingerless gloves. I have whipped up wraps, played with a variety of yarns and cussed my way into and out of some intricate entanglements.

Today I take my knitting almost everywhere I go from meetings to lunch to sitting in Paul’s office and spending time together. When possible my afternoons are filled with old TV shows and lots of yarn.

Recently I started my own Etsy Store to share with the general public my creations. It’s something I love to do and it would be great if I could make some cash from it. And with our current locale, I have a lot of need for different knitted wonders, including scarves and hats, plus also big comfy socks for cold winter nights, dog sweaters, and Christmas stockings.

I dare say my love for knitting now outweighs my love for the Doctor, but both are travels through space (interesting imaginings) and time (vintage patterns) experiencing wonderful adventures (new techniques, new supplies, new stitches, new tricks) and all with my trusty companions (Polly and Millie on the couch next to me as I knit and purl). The only difference is instead of a sonic screwdriver, I have double-pointed knitting needles.

My Silly Millie Girl – 40 Days of Thankfulness

Early morning, still dark. I’m being watched, stared at with penetrating black eyes. I feign sleep, but my attacker moves to phase two of “Wake the Humans.” A cold nose on my cheek, a tongue in my ear (not the good kind) and then if I don’t respond in a nanosecond, a tongue in my mouth (gross). Then the growls begin and all havoc breaks loose. That is a typical morning for me thanks to Silly Millie.

Though Polly is my special girl whom I’ve known and loved since the day she was born, Millie is my other sweetie pie. Paul contributed a lot to our relationship: love, understanding, compassion, humor and another wonderful little girl to love.

Millie is a mix of miniature schnauzer and maltese, but she sure acts like a rabid monster of a canine when she wants to. Not so much the loving type, she shows her affections by playing for hours and staring you down when you stop before she wants to.

She can be a handful, but what kid isn’t sometimes. I just love her up. My little terrier-ist. What a wonderful gift she is. Many thanks.
